It is estimated that colon cancer will kill 50,000 people in the United States this year. But found early, that number could be lowered substantially. So why do so many still die from it? The answer and the solution can be found in a medical laboratory in Cleveland, Ohio.

A team of researchers led by Sanford Markowitz, M.D., Ph.D. at the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine has found a way to detect colon canc cancer quickly and non-invasively.

Colon cancer is the third most common cancer in men and women. It is estimated that there will be more than 108,000 new cases of colon cancer in 2008 and more than 49,000 deaths from colon and rectal cancer combined. Caught early, it is often curable.

TGen researchers are working to identify the underlying genetic components of colon cancer. This information could one day yield new insights in the development of more effective strategies for early detection, prevention and treatment of this terrible disease.

What if you could personally participate in research that could help determine factors that cause or prevent cancer?

What if your involvement, and that research, ultimately leads to eliminate cancer as a major health problem for this and future generations?

What if you could make it so just one family, never had to hear the words you have cancer?

This coming year, at the The Relay For Life of Dearborn (www.relayforlife.org/dearbornmi or or rfldearborn@gmail.com) at the Ford Community & Performing Arts Center on May 2, 2009 from 11:00 AM 3:00 PM, you will have an unprecedented opportunity to participate in research in our community. The American Cancer Society will be enrolling participants for their newest research study, the cancer prevention Study-3 (CPS-3). Once enrolled, a participants 20-30 year commitment to the study will involve completing a questionnaire approximately every 2 years.

Individuals between the ages of 30-65, who have never been diagnosed with cancer, and who are willing to make a long-term commitment to the study are eligible to enroll. Cancer survivors are asked to help spread the word, and encourage family members and friends to enroll.
