When was the last time you tried to buy a plain old deodorant? I’m only asking because I can’t find one anywhere, or rather I couldn’t.

Instead, everywhere sold anti-perspirant deodorants and I just wanted the deodorant without the anti perspirant bit.

Why?

Well, in the last two years I have lost three friends to breast cancer and have had my own personal mammogram scare. Fortunately the biopsy was benign but even so it was a pretty traumatic experience and I began to wonder what on earth is going on.

I read in the paper last week that the rate for breast cancer is currently 1:9 and that all women aged between 50 and 69 should receive a free breast examination every two years. Unfortunately those ladies most at risk like my mother who is over 70 years of age don’t qualify.

Another thing I discovered is that in a recent study carried out by Reading University in UK on breast cancer patients, every single tumour contained parabens.

Now parabens are common preservatives in several personal care products. They are derived from petrochemicals and personal and skin care manufacturers have a tendancy to call them ‘organic preservatives’ which gives the impression they are safe.

The reason they are able to do this is because the chemical term for ‘organic’ means anything that contains a carbon atom. Since crude oil comes from decaying leaves and living matter which existed thousands of years ago, its DNA contains carbon. Sneaky, eh?

The problem with parabens is that they mimic estrogen, apart from also causing allergic skin reactions and being eye, skin and respiratory tract irritants.

Found in body creams, lotions, body washes, anti perspirants and deodorants, parabens are used in more personal care products than any other synthetic ingredient.

Now deodorants reduce, cover up or eliminate the odours most of us would prefer to remain hidden and anti perspirants slow down the action of the sweat glands. They do this by obstructing the amount of perspiration that can be excreted.

That’s the problem and why I was looking for a deodorant.

You see the sweat retarding agents are based on aluminium complexes and I know from bitter experience that aluminium is a neuro toxin. That means it attacks the neurons in the brain. It doesn’t have to kill them, just disrupt them in some way and you get mental problems.

My son is autistic and you can read all about my run in with heavy metals including aluminium in my book Autism, Amalgam and Me, Jodi’s Journey Continues. Aluminium has also been linked to Alzheimer’s disease which has been predicted to triple by the year 2050. It’s a horrible long destructive illness which tears families apart.

But back to the anti perspirant deodorants.

I don’t know if you are aware of it but your skin is often referred to as your third kidney. It is the biggest eliminatory organ in your body and is a two way membrane. It will absorb 60% of whatever you put on it.

Toxins get in through hair follicles and sebaceous glands and are eliminated through perspiration. Now picture the scenario for most women.

We like to keep our underarms devoid of excess bodily hair so we shave. We also like to smell fresh, so we smooth on deodorants or anti perspirants to the area from which we’ve just removed this hair. As toxins enter the body via hair follicles and sebaceous glands they inevitably get inside our bodies but if we then block up our under arm sweat glands by using anti perspirant deodorants, how do they get out?

Seemingly, they don’t and I wonder if that’s why my three friends died of breast cancer and all those women had parabens in their tumours. What do you think?

Apparently a study of 400 American women found that those who shaved three times a week and applied deodorant at least twice a week were almost 15 years younger when diagnosed with cancer than women who did neither.

The answer, therefore, could be to stop shaving and let your natural body odours loose, or find a safer alternative. Thankfully I’ve managed to find just that in a 100% toxic synthetic chemical free deodorant which comes in three different aromas.

It’s organic in the true sense of the word which means it uses only natural substances and methods. I can read and pronounce every single ingredient and as it is Certified Organic to food standards I could theoretically eat it and suffer no ill effects. I don’t intend to try it though. Just putting it under my arm pits, feeling safe and secure in the knowledge I’m not being poisoned is enough.

No more toxic anti perspirant deodorants for me. How about you?

For some, full cover means cover at every stage of the disease, whether it be short-term chemotherapy, longer term medication or even palliative care should it become terminal. However, other providers may place limits on the length of time you can receive treatment, and may stop paying after a set period of time – for example, 2 years.

There seems to be a lot of uncertainty amongst PMI customers with regards to their pre-existing conditions being covered if they switch providers. Each provider will generally have their own rules around this, but some only ask you questions 5 years back in your medical history. Just because you’ve made a past claim, it doesn’t mean it will automatically be excluded on a new policy.

Studies show that certain vitamins, minerals and natural products provide protection against cancer. Whether in the form of fruit, tea or food supplements, these nutrients are a major asset to everyone wanting to protection from cancer. Let’s take a look at some of the most well known vitamins, whilst introducing perhaps a few lesser-known naturally occurring products.

Vitamin E

Several studies have shown that vitamin E, particularly in conjunction with Selenium, could have a protective role against prostate cancer. Vitamin E helps combat free radicals that play a role in the appearance of cancer.

The results of a cancer prevention study carried out in Finland, published its results in 1998. The study involved 29,133 men, all smokers, who every day for a period of 6 years took either 50 mg of vitamin E or a placebo. The incidence of prostate cancer in those taking the daily dose of vitamin E showed an overall reduction of 32% over those taking the placebo.

Selenium

Selenium is a mineral found in the ground and which we ingest through eating fruits and vegetables. Men with low levels of selenium in the blood have a risk of prostate cancer four to five times higher than normal. The amount of Selenium retained in the bloodstream reduces with age, and unfortunately the soil in many western countries (where the risk of prostate cancer is highest) is poor in selenium.

The results of a clinical study carried out by the University of Arizona showed that taking a complement of 200 micrograms of Selenium each day could reduce the incidence of prostate cancer by 63%.

Selenium also enters our diet by beng present in cereals, meat, fish, and eggs. Liver and Brazil nuts are also particularly rich sources of selenium.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is especially well known, along with calcium, for the important role it plays in the health of your bones. The body synthesizes about two-thirds of its vitamin D requirement thanks to the sun (assuming you spend enough time in the sun). The rest is obtained through food.

Vitamin D is also an important anti-cancer weapon. Several American studies have shown that people who live at more northerly latitudes are significantly more prone to cancer than those who live near to the Equator. Those further north are generally deficient in vitamin D due to the weaker sunlight. This is certainly true for prostate cancer: for example the results of a study published in the December 1992 issue of the journal “Cancer” demonstrate that the incidence of prostate cancer in the state of Florida is twice that in the northern State of Maine.

Quercetin

Quercetin is a substance synthesized by plants, and which belongs to the large group known as flavenoids. It is found in substances such as red wine, onions and green tea. Quercetin possesses anti-oxidant properties. In 1999 a food complement formulated using Quercetin, Bromelain and Papain (enzymes extracted from pineapples and papaya fruits) underwent a placebo-controlled test on 30 patients suffering from chronic prostatitis. 20% of patients taking the placebo and 67% taking the food complement showed an improvement.

A further randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, conducted by the Institute for Male Urology in Encino, California, found that 82% of patients who received another proprietary blend of Quercetin, recorded at least a 25% improvement in the National Institutes of Health pain and quality of life symptom score. Importantly, all of these patients had failed to show improvement after taking several courses of antibiotics and other therapies before participating in the study.

A Vitamin Cocktail

Another American study, the results of which were published in 1999, demonstrated that vitamin and mineral supplements guard against prostate cancer. Researchers compared the effects of vitamins on 697 men aged between 40 and 64 and suffering from prostate cancer, with the effects on 666 men in good health. The results demonstrated that regular taking of vitamins C and E together with zinc reduces the risk of prostate cancer.

As can be seen from the above examples, the taking of certain vitamins and minerals can have demonstrable benefits in the prevention of prostate cancer. All men over the age of 40 should seriously consider taking some of these simple preventative measures as an aid to their well-being. Indeed there are several proprietary formulations available commercially providing balanced doses of several of these naturally occurring products.

Very original! I like it. I like the title too. If the character is not a minor though, why is she going away to camp? I would actually have her be a college student, and perhaps the school she attends has an amazing medical center/teaching hospital, so she tries experimental cancer treatments for free? Or she has a university health insurance plan that covers her treatment? Just some suggestions, but I do like your plot so far.

Significant risk factors for chronic kidney disease (CKD) are not being addressed in the United States, according to a report of the National Kidney Foundation’s (NKF) Kidney Early Evaluation Program (KEEP).

This report summarized health information of 37,000 individuals who are at risk for kidney disease. Risk factors include diabetes, hypertension or a family history of kidney disease. Half of the participants in the report had CKD, yet only two percent were aware of it. Those with the disease tend to have other serious health problems, such as obesity and anemia.

“Awareness of risk factors and the need for screening can go a long way toward early detection and prevention of kidney disease,” says Allan Collins, MD, president-elect of the NKF and director of the KEEP Data Coordinating Center.

“Ninety percent of KEEP participants reported visiting their doctors in the last 12 months,” continues Collins, “yet most were not aware that they could be at risk for chronic kidney disease.”

The right kind of screening is of critical importance, according to the NKF. Almost half of KEEP participants test positive for microalbuminuria, or trace amounts of protein in the urine, which is the earliest sign of kidney disease.

“The good news is that we appear to be having an effect on many populations that would advance to dialysis or kidney transplantation. Nearly 60 percent of KEEP participants provide post-screening follow-up information and many report consulting with their physicians regarding elevated blood pressure, anemia, and more because of information they learned through the screening,” says Collins.

“Ortho Biotech Products, L.P. “CKD is not just a ‘kidney problem.’ Kidneys are responsible for filtering toxins out of the body; if they’re damaged, the whole body suffers,” said Dr. Laura A.
